Courtroom to hard court

Heekin, Malin, Wenzel and New defeated The Law July 22 to claim back-to-back Law League Basketball Championships. Player/coach Hunter Malin guided the championship team that included David Thompson, Antonio Kirkland, Fraz Ahmed, Casey Bryant, Jarahn Newman, Ed Ronsman, Gordon Fenderson, Andy Jackson and Daniel Fallon. Eight teams played during the spring league and six teams in the summer. Games were held at Jacksonville Indoor Sports.

Spohrer & Dodd honored

Instructional videos and promotion of the Florida Bar’s board certification program earned the law firm of Spohrer & Dodd a 2008 Award of Excellence from he state bar.

“The Spohrer & Dodd firm has an excellent communications program that emphasizes the merits of board certification,” said Michael Tanner, former chair of the Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization and Education.

The firm has produced educational videos for use by the Bar’s board certification program and promotes the program on the firm’s Web site, newsletters and news releases.

“Board certification is very important to us in recognition of peers with special expertise in civil trial and aviation law and we want to encourage attorneys who meet the rigorous requirements apply for board certification,” said Spohrer.

Golf, too

It wasn’t all business at the annual FLABOTA awards banquet in Palm Coast lest weekend. Charles Sorenson, of Coker, Schickel, Sorenson & Daniel; Jep Barbour, of MarksGray; and Ed Fernandez, of EVPS, Inc., were part of a four-man team that won the low net at the FLABOTA Golf tournament at the Ginn Hammock Beach Resort July 26. Tad Griffin, of Pajcic & Pajcic and Terry Surrency, representative from tournament sponsor Merrill Lynch, were part of a four-man team to win low gross.

Not the judge

The Peter Dearing Band played at Wild Wing Cafe at Tinseltown Friday night. No, Circuit Court Judge Peter L. Dearing wasn’t responsible for “vocals, guitar, loop pedal and beat box.” It’s the self-proclaimed “power-pop artist” of the same name that was entertaining the crowd at one of Tinseltown’s newest restaurants.

CLE class tomorrow

Attorneys seeking continuing legal education (CLE) credits can attend a “Defending Foreclosures in Florida” seminar tomorrow at Florida Coastal School of Law. The topics that will be covered include: federal and state laws governing mortgage lending, origination and servicing; understanding loan documents and the origination and closing process; servicing problems and post origination issues; common law/ state and federal law claims and affirmative defenses; and drafting discovery/motion practice.

Admission is free to all attorneys who accept at least one pro bono case. The seminar will take place in Room 425 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. It will be taught by April Charney of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. For more information call 224-7050.
