There will still be a chocolate on the pillow after your bed is turned down at the Omni, but you won’t find a phone book in your room any more. The 45 Omni hotels and resorts in North America are recycling their current stock of directories and won’t be accepting shipments when the 2009 phone books are published. According to figures provided by Omni Hotels, eliminating the 60,000 books received will save each year 217 barrels of oil, 760,200 gallons of water and 445,260 kilowatts of energy used to produce and transport the books. It’s also estimated that over the next 10 years, 18,000 trees will be preserved that would otherwise be turned into pulp for phone books. For guests who don’t wish to look up phone numbers on the Internet, directories will be available by request through the concierge and the hotels are also providing complimentary local directory assistance calls.
