• City Council member Jack Webb has joined the labor and employment law specialists of Harper Gerlach LLC after spending approximately the past nine years as Director of Labor and Employee Relations at CEVA Logistics.
• Attorneys Moses Meide and Troy K. Smith have been named to the board of directors at Learn to Read along with Josh Clifton of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
• Speaking of Learn to Read, the 11th Annual Scrabble Soiree is set for Nov. 20 at St. John’s Cathedral. To enter the contest — and help mark the 70th anniversary of the Scrabble game — call 399-8894.
• The Glyn Cook Memorial Scholarship is being developed to help the children at daniel, a non-profit agency that provides professional assistance for children. Cook, who died earlier this year, was a member of the organization’s board of governors, a Rotarian and president of Reads Moving Systems.
• The Riverside Arts Festival is Sept. 6-7 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for its 37th year, but it wouldn’t have made it this far without help. Riverside Avondale Preservation is looking for volunteers to help with the festival. • The Southside Businessmen’s Club will have U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw and his opponent Jay McGovern as its guest speakers Sept. 24. The group meets at San Jose Country Club at 12:30.
• The second in a four-part workshop series for aspiring entrepreneurs to help complete a business plan will take place tomorrow Aug. 26 at the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce. Chamber membership is not required to attend the series, but the cost is $45 per session. The price includes the cost of the series and ActivePlans Software to enhance business strategies.
