Several members of Mayor John Peyton’s staff and many other City workers gathered Monday afternoon to say a few kind words about Dan McCarthy, the City’s chief of military affairs, before he leaves to become State Attorney-elect Angela Corey’s chief assistant next week.

McCarthy (talking with Peyton) started with the City May 18, 2003 and said this was the longest job he’s ever had. Over that time he said there were many memories.

“I’ll remember a lot of things,” he said. “(Former U.S. Rep.) Tillie Fowler’s funeral, being the largest gainer during BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure), getting a nuclear carrier was a huge moment, the fallen families, the Wounded Warrior Project, getting a VA cemetery and the Fourth Fleet dedication ceremony.”

Peyton said McCarthy’s successor hasn’t been chosen, but he has developed a “short list” and is interviewing. About 200 people applied for the job.

“Replacing him will be a tall order,” said Peyton.
