With 2007 in the books, it was time to start the year anew for some local organizations.
The Northeast Florida Builders Association and its Sales and Marketing Council set a new course, new leaders and a new theme for 2008 during their January installations.
Almost 500 people attended the event, which also served as both NEFBA’s and SMC’s monthly meeting at the University of North Florida’s University Center.
The crowd witnessed the changing of the guard for both organizations with Mark Downing and Alayna Oram moving up the ranks in NEFBA and SMC, respectively.
The theme for 2008 is “Perseverance,” a battle cry that most industry members can relate to, said Master of Ceremonies Brad King of Wachovia Mortgage. Prizes were given to random audience members who correctly answered questions about historical figures who persevered through adversity.
Downing of CornerStone Homes was installed as the 64th NEFBA president, taking over from 2007 president Bill Cellar of Providence Homes. Cellar will now occupy the membership chair for NEFBA, taking over for Jerry Linder of The Vintage Group.
“Mark’s a man of great integrity, high passion and character,” said Cellar. “You’re in great hands.”
One of Downing’s friends and acquaintances, Lockwood Holmes of People Management Company, gave a speech about Downing, praising his merits while recollecting his history with him.
“A harder worker I’ve never met,” said Holmes. “He wanted to learn, he committed himself and absorbed it all like a sponge. Mark will hold the course and embrace the change that will come.”
Downing went right to work. After saying a few encouraging words about what his plans are he issued his first proclamation as president.
“We’re not through this yet. It’s a cycle and we will get through this,” said Downing. “And as my first official act, I am declaring all pity parties now over. We have a lot of work to do, so let’s go do it.”
