For 7,000 Jacksonville drivers every week, the object in the photo is an all-too-common result of poor judgment on the road. This specific ticket, from Dec. 8, 2003, was issued to a “John Doe” for traveling 24 mph in a 15-mph school zone. Doe’s fine was $84.20, and a few weeks later he paid it to the place where most fines are paid — the Clerk of the Courts office. However, the Clerk didn’t get much of that money. In fact, the fine was split up among various government agencies, leaving the Clerk only 6 percent, or $5.05. To see how the Clerk’s office handles the thousands of tickets paid every week, and where those fine dollars go, see story 'Tickets are big business...' inside.
