• Wednesday Circuit Court Judge Bernard Nachman granted a temporary injunction on behalf of School Board member Betty Burney. The injunction requires that Vivian Wright — who filed to run against Burney — be removed from the Aug. 26 ballot. At question was Wright’s residency. She has been teaching in South Carolina since January and testified she came back to Jacksonville on the weekends. According to Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland, Nachman explained to Wright that she would be deposed as would family members and a trial would be set quickly. Holland said Wright then volunteered to have her name removed.
• Starbucks announced that it will be closing 600 of its under-performing U.S. stores. So what about the two Downtown locations at 11 E. and the Landing? In-store personnel hadn’t heard anything, a statement from Starbucks said that details of closings are still being finalized and that a complete list of closings will be published. Even with no official word, Michael Chambliss, marketing director at the Landing, said people shouldn’t be worried about the Landing’s location closing.
• No update on the health of City Council President Ronnie Fussell. As reported in Monday’s Daily Record, after being released from the hospital in time to make last Thursday’s City Council Installation Ceremony, Fussell may face surgery some time this week.
• One more from CFF: Two local chapter associates, Dana Troger and Liza Wrobel, have been appointed to the 18-member National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Circle of Excellence. The North Florida office is one of only two CFF chapters in the nation to have two team members selected to participate in the group.
• Since 1988, Ray Hays, president of PRC Digital Media, has delivered desktop-sized American flags to his clients and contacts the week before Independence Day. This year, Hays went high-tech and delivered a CD-ROM collection of flags and copies of the nation’s founding documents. He also delivered the message, “Share with someone a moment of pride that our nation, while not perfect, represents the world’s best hope for freedom.”
