North Florida’s newest - and most unusual - golf course is on schedule to open in November.

An old landfill on Jacksonville’s Southside is being turned into a golf course by developer Dane Cates and will be named Sunbeam Hill Golf Course. It will have nine holes, will measure around 3,400 yards and will have townhomes.

The course is now being grassed and other site work is underway.

The clubhouse and maintenance facility are under construction and also are expected to open in November.

Shawn Sheridan, formerly of Royal St. Augustine, has been hired as the superintendent.

Cates’ company, Retirement Corporation of America-Florida, acquired the 225-acre property from Waste Management. The landfill has been closed since 1986 and contains an estimated 4 million cubic feet of garbage.
