State Young Lawyers Board adds Law
Attorney Kimberly Killian Law of Holland & Knight was sworn in June 20 to the Florida Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors. Law will take the seat vacated by former Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Division President Kevin Cook. She will serve on three boards: Practicing Professionals, Law Related Education and Equality of Life. Law will also serve as a liaison between the state and local chapters. She specializes in banking and finance and class action and financial services litigation. After serving on the JBA Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors, Law will now serve as an ex officio member of the board.
Appointment to Supreme Court Historical Society
Joe Milton, founder of Milton Leach Whitman D’Andrea & Milton, has been elected second vice president of the Florida Supreme Court Historical Society. He is a past president of the Jacksonville Bar Association and specializes in civil trial litigation. The society’s purpose is to educate the public on the role of courts in our system of government and to preserve the history of the Florida Judiciary. The society has 640 members.
Hank Coxe, Rutledge Liles and George Schulz Jr., all of Jacksonville, were elected to serve three-year terms as trustees of the society.
Middle District nomination
President George W. Bush has nominated an attorney from Holland & Knight for U.S. Attorney of the Middle District of Florida. Brian Albritton practices out of the firm’s Tampa office and practices law in areas of litigation, environment, intellectual property, white collar defense, non-competition; antitrust, trade regulation and competition; and trade secrets and defecting employees. The Middle District includes 35 of the 67 counties in Florida and extends from the Florida-Georgia border near Jacksonville to the southern-most boundary of Naples. The headquarters is in Tampa with branch offices in Jacksonville, Orlando and Ft. Myers.
Compensation judge vacancy
The Statewide Nominating Commission for Judges of Compensation Claims is now accepting applications to fill a vacancy in Jacksonville and another in Gainesville.
The term of the successful Jacksonville candidate will commence upon gubernatorial appointment and the Gainesville appointment will commence upon gubernatorial appointment, but not before May 12, 2009.
Applications for the positions may be obtained from the Office of the Judges of Compensation Claims Web site at http://www.fljcc.org.
An original and one copy of each application must be provided to Victor Marrero, SNCJCC Chair, Director of Risk Management, Broward Sheriff’s Office, 2601 West Broward Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale 33312 — and one copy to each commission member — no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 8.
E-recording now available
Clerk of the Court Jim Fuller has announced that E-Recording has come to Duval County. He’ll hold an informational meeting and demonstration Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. on the 15th floor of the Courthouse Annex on Bay Street.
Barrett joins Fowler White
Fowler White Boggs Banker has added David Barrett as an associate in the firm’s Jacksonville office. Barrett will practice in the firm’s commercial litigation group where he’ll handle commercial and business litigation and other cases. He’s a graduate of the University of Illinois and went to Stetson Law School.

UF Law Professor honored by Florida Bar
Michael Seigel was the second UF Faculty member to be awarded the Florida Bar “Faculty Professionalism Award.” The co-recipient was recognized for his commitment to instilling the ideals and values of the legal profession through teaching, scholarship and service to the profession.
Seigel is the first UF recipient to receive the award since 2000.
The Harvard Law School graduate first joined the UF faculty in 1990, and left the institution to serve as first assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida in 1995.
Seigel returned to UF’s Levin College of Law in 2000 as the associate dean of academic affairs. During his second term at UF he created “Ethics Exhortation,” a lecture on ethics and professionalism given during the orientation of new law students. Seigel also took part in redesigning the orientation to involve more faculty and added an important diversity component.
His efforts were also recognized by students who honored him with a “Teacher of the Year” award in 2007.
