• If you have tried to access the “Scheduled Meetings and City Events” page at the City’s official Web site, www.coj.net, you may have seen a message explaining that your access is denied because your “credentials” aren’t valid. The problem is the server is malfunctioning and the Information Technology Department is working with the Procurement Department to obtain new equipment. In an e-mail sent to the Daily Record after we pointed out the situation, IT Director Kevin Holzendorf stated, “I have engaged the troops” to “get us out of the danger zone.”
• If you noticed it’s unusually quiet at certain times of the day Downtown, there’s a good reason. “Big Jim” — the steam whistle that sounds morning noon and afternoon — has been temporarily silenced. A water pipe at the Main Street Water Plant is being replaced and Big Jim’s air supply pipe sits directly above it and has been disconnected. The job is expected to take two weeks at which time the whistle will be back in operation.
• Stefan Mayerlen, owner and operator of A Fine Shine Professional Carwash & Detailing Service, has decided to celebrate his 14th anniversary in business with some special prices. During the month of August, he’s rolling back prices to what he charged when he washed his first car, as low as $16.50 for a basic wash, dress the tires and rims and clean the windows. • Happy Landing, the bar and package store at the Landing, is now selling cell phones and service and has therefore extended its hours. It’s now open for business Monday and Tuesday 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-2 a.m. and Sunday noon-8 p.m.
• In the race for School Board Dist. 1, State Rep. Stan Jordan has found a clever way to remind football loving voters to get to the polls next month. He’s handing out bumper sticker-sized leaflets with the football schedules of Terry Parker and Sandalwood high schools, Jacksonville University, the University of Florida, Florida State and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The catch? Inserted in the schedules is a colored Aug. 26 date with “Vote Stan Jordan” as the opponent
