• State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente was one of three women inducted into the Florida Hall of Fame recently by Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Pariente is the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, serving as Chief Justice from 2004-2006. Pariente, a graduate of George Washington University, began her 20-year career as a Florida federal district court law clerk and made a name as one of South Florida’s pioneering women trial attorneys. Other Hall of Fame inductees were Dr. Pallavi Patel of Tampa and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami.

• As a reminder, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid holds free legal clinics the second Wednesday of every month from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the JALA offices on West Adams Street. The clinics cover topics such as avoiding foreclosure, detecting foreclosure scams and signs of predatory lending.

• The Marketing and Advertising Law Subcommittee of the Intellectual Property Section of the American Bar Association is hosting a free Round table discussion on behavioral advertising on March 28 at Florida Coastal School of Law on from noon-1:30 p.m. James Young, Economic Crimes Bureau Chief for the Attorney General’s Office, will be there to share the government’s perspective. • The fifth annual Honorable Ralph W. “Buddy” Nimmons Jr. Seminar is scheduled for April 23 from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the U.S. Courthouse jury assembly room. Barry Richard, lead litigation counsel for George W. Bush in the 2000 Florida presidential election litigation, will speak on “security, patriotism and the erosion of American liberties.” James Cooney III, who successfully defended Duke University lacrosse player Reade Selignmann, will speak on litigation ethics. Other programs are included, and lawyers can receive five hours of Florida Bar CLE credit, including 1.5 hours of ethics credit. • Macquarie Mortgages on Deerwood Park Boulevard has informed the City that it is laying off several employees. According to Executive Director Mike Barrett, 69 people are losing their jobs starting May 8.

• The local Bar associations are teaming up to put on a day-long seminar at Florida Coastal School of Law. The D.W. Perkins Bar Association, Hispanic Bar Association of Northeast Florida and the Jacksonville Asian American Bar Association are sponsoring a seminar designed to help teach lawyers how to better manage their offices. It’s April 10 from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and costs $50. Also, it’s worth 4.5 CLE credits and 2 ethics credits. For more information, contact Maria Aguila at 638-1338. Staff members from the Florida Bar’s Law Office Management Assistance Service and area providers will teach the courses.
