• The Players Championship staff held its annual media day outing Monday and it was quite memorable for Ch. 30/47 meteorologist Mike Buresh who made a hole-in-one on No. 13. Word is, the ball bounced off a tree and couldn’t be found. Finally, someone looked in the cup and found Buresh’s golf ball.
• Speaking of media day, no bulky media kits this year. Instead, the media were given a zip drive that came in a box about the size of a small wallet.
• Nice touch at Bank of America Downtown. When the line gets five or six deep, as long as you are just making a deposit or a payment, a customer service representative will take your transaction and write a receipt while you are standing there.
• The grand opening of the NFL’s Youth Education Town is set for March 28 at 11 a.m. The West 25th Street facility is a result of Jacksonville hosting the Super Bowl in 2005. Jaguars owners Wayne and Delores Weaver, several City officials and financial donors will be on hand.
• Golfers will be driving to end domestic violence at the 14th Annual ADT Hubbard House Golf Classic April 6-7. This year’s event is at Deercreek Country Club and will benefit Hubbard House, a comprehensive domestic violence center that serves victims and their children in Duval and Baker counties. Festivities will include a welcome reception and auction as well as a day of golf with prizes, skill contests, an awards ceremony and cookout. • A pair of well-known emcees have joined the lineup for the “There Oughta Be a Law” lawyer variety show. University of North Florida President and former Mayor John Delaney and the City’s General Counsel, Rick Mullaney have signed on for the inaugural event that will be held June 27 at the T-U Center’s Terry Theatre.
• The Professional Cheerleaders Alumni (PCA) will award its first-ever community grant on June 2. The PCA was founded by former Jaguars cheerleaders who want to continue their sisterhood with other Roar alumni while reaching out to the community. Non-profit agencies benefiting women and children are encouraged to submit an application before May 30 for the $500 award. • Based on the 2007 Annual Report, the Jacksonville Port Authority logged another successful year. It earned $39.9 million in operating revenues, marking the seventh consecutive fiscal year of record revenues. Port facilities handled 8,309,201 tons of cargo and recorded gains in vehicle, roll-on, roll-off and bulk cargoes. Also in 2007, nearly 130,000 cruise passengers embarked from the Cruise Terminal on 78 voyages aboard the Carnival Celebration.
