Former Jacksonville Bar Association President Tom Edwards of Jacksonville will be sworn in as president of the Florida Justice Association at its annual conference May 30 in Orlando.

Edwards, a partner at Peek, Cobb, Edwards & Ragatz, for the past few years has split his time between practicing law and lobbying the legislature for the FJA on consumer issues. Last year, he successfully lobbied for two measures resulting in laws that require hotels to have carbon monoxide detectors if they have boiler rooms and increased mandatory bodily injury insurance requirements for people convicted of DUIs or other serious offenses.

Edwards’ agenda for 2008 includes seeking transparency of nursing home ownership and protecting consumers from mandatory arbitration clauses that forfeit their access to the courts.
