For most people, it’s not an everyday experience to have the opportunity to be part of setting a new world record but that’s exactly what happened for a couple of people who work at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. General Manager Dan King and Human Resources Office Administrator Carolyn Shuck helped set a new global mark for the “Largest Shared Reading Experience” when they were two of more than 425,000 people who now share the new record.

Hyatt Hotels in North America participated in the event sponsored by Jumpstart, a national nonprofit organization that brings at-risk preschool students together with adults to focus on building literacy skills.

King and Shuck visited a pre-k class at John N. Love Elementary School where King read to the students from the book, “Corduroy” written by Don Freeman and published by Penguin Young Readers Group.

After distributing special-edition copies of the book to the students, King said Hyatt’s participation in the event was part of the corporation’s Family of Responsible and Caring Employees (FORCE) program. He also said Hyatt Gold Passport members donated more than $12,000 to Jumpstart this year to support the organization’s early literacy initiatives.

Shuck, who once taught pre-k at the school, added, “It doesn’t take anything at all to give a little of your time back to children and community.”
