• If you enjoy a cold beverage at Lemon Bar time is running out for this year. The oceanfront bar in Neptune Beach will shut down for the season at closing time Nov. 2. That just happens to be Georgia-Florida weekend.

• Area members of the Jacksonville Association of Firefighters will be on the streets next weekend with their boots in hand as part of the annual fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year, the association raised more than $123,000 and the goal this year is $150,000.
• A few notes from the Fire Station No. 5 ceremony... Attendees had a chance to see firefighters go to action – twice – during the Tuesday ceremony, as alarms sounded on two occasions during JFRD Tom Francis’ opening comments. On-duty firefighters responded and received a round of applause. Mayor John Peyton and Council members Warren Jones, Michael Corrigan and Glorious Johnson all attended. JFRD Director Dan Kleman humorously misspoke, calling his introduction of Peyton a “chore.” He quickly corrected himself and called it a pleasure, which drew laughs from the audience and Peyton himself.
• Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick is seeking support from Mayor John Peyton in his bid to become the president-elect of the Florida League of Mayors. The current president is Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan, who was in town recently to speak at a “green conference” at the Hyatt. The organization will elect its officers at its November meeting in Orlando.
• Speaking of Peyton, his annual holiday festival for senior citizens is Dec. 6 at the Prime Osborn III Center from 2-5 p.m. Tickets are $5 for those 60 and older and group transportation (15 or more) is available. For more, go to www.coj.net or call 630-7392.
• With predictions of over 200,000 fans attending the 2008 Naval Air Station’s Jax Air Show Oct. 25 and 26, the Florida Department of Transportation is asking travelers to use the free 511 Traffic Information Service before driving. Users can get real time traffic updates via their cell phone or by logging onto the Web site at www.Jax511.com.
• Group 5 At-Large Council member Glorious Johnson has been appointed to the Florida Commission on the Status of Women by Gov. Charlie Crist. She will serve through Sept. 30, 2011.
