The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville is offering an eight-week class for training new docent volunteers to lead museum tours for the visiting public beginning Sept. 22.
MOCA Jacksonville is seeking volunteers who are interested in being trained as docents to present tour experiences for the museum’s visitors. The tour program is visitor-centered and requires facilitation as opposed to lecture skills and no prior knowledge of art or art history is required.
Anyone with an interest in community service, the arts and the general public is welcome to apply. Individuals are especially encouraged to apply who have done undergraduate or graduate work in education or art education, early childhood or elementary education, or classroom teaching experience, as well as those individuals who have professional or volunteer experience in nontraditional education but possess a knowledge of facilitating or have an interest in inquiry-based learning.
Training classes are held on Mondays from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. for eight weeks beginning Sept. 22 through Nov. 17. Attendance is mandatory. For more information or to receive an application, call the MOCA Education Department at 366-6911 ext. 212, or e-mail [email protected]., or go to MOCA’s Web site — mocajacksonville.org. Docent training space is limited.
MOCA, which is on the corner of Laura and Duval streets, is funded in part by the City of Jacksonville; the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs; The Florida Arts Council; the National Endowment for the Arts; and through the support of its members.
