2009 Law Day Cable Programming Television Shows — throughout April

In partnership with the General Counsel’s Office and Comcast, the television show was produced on March 16 and will air throughout the month of April in order to inform the public about the many events in celebration of this year’s Law Day theme — President Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial.

Law for the Layperson/Naturalization Clinics — throughout May

The JBA, in conjunction with the Florida Coastal School of Law Clinics, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Hispanic Bar Association of Northeast Florida will provide four free informative presentations to the public on issues such as U.S. naturalization, bankruptcy, consumers’ rights, and family law to reach out to a diverse community and expand the public’s understanding of the Rule of Law. These presentations will be held in May at Coastal Law. Specifically, the presentations are going to be: Naturalization, May 19 by David Vedder and Giselle Carson; Bankruptcy, May 21 by Robert Wilbert; Consumers’ Rights, May 26 by Laura Boeckman; and Family Law, May 28 by Paola Parra-Harris.  

The events are being promoted through various media and multicultural chambers of commerce/alliances such as the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; IndoUS Chamber, African-American Chamber and the Jacksonville Asian-American Alliance. These events will be held at Coastal Law from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  

Law Day Presentations to Public Schools — May 1—8

Numerous judges and lawyers have volunteered to give presentations to students at area high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties.

Art and Book Supply for Duval County Elementary Schools —

throughout April

Members of the JBA have coordinated to receive donations of books and art supplies appropriate for elementary school students to benefit the Duval County public elementary schools.

Amicus Briefs, Diapers, et. al. — throughout April

Members of the JBA have coordinated to receive donations of diapers (all sizes), baby formula, disposable razors, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sheets (new or used), and towels (new or used) to benefit the residents of the Sulzbacher Center.

High School Mock Trial Competition — Saturday

Students from several Duval County high schools will participate in a full-day mock trial competition at the Duval County Courthouse.

Law Day Luncheon — May 4, 2009

In addition to hearing from keynote speaker Steve Zack, President Elect of the American Bar Association, the Lawyer of the Year Award and the Liberty Bell Award (bestowed upon a non-lawyer who has fostered a greater understanding and appreciation of the “rule of law”) will be presented.
