How did you get involved?
Several years ago, a good friend suggested that I join the board of the Housing Partnership. Last year, I was nominated for Leadership Jacksonville as a result of my involvement with the Housing Partnership. I’ve been attending Good Shepherd since I started dating my wife 17 years ago.
How can someone else get involved?
To get involved with the Housing Partnership, call the executive director Harry Hampel at (904) 398-4424. Harry is always looking for energetic and talented individuals to join the board. There are also opportunities at the Housing Partnership to assist with wheelchair ramp building projects throughout the year or with Paint the Town, which is a rehab blitz the Housing Partnership conducts every spring in a targeted neighborhood. This year, the Housing Partnership renovated 31 homes in the East 21st Street neighborhood with 940 volunteers, all in one week. Applicants to Leadership Jacksonville are nominated by Leadership Jacksonville alumni and go through an application and panel interview process. Anyone who is a community leader and wants to learn more about all aspects of the City should seek out a Leadership Jacksonville alumnus and ask to be nominated. The doors at the Church of the Good Shepherd are open to everyone.
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
Through Leadership Jacksonville, I learned that while there are many needs in the community, there are an amazing number of caring people in Jacksonville who are doing incredible things to try to meet those needs.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
The last book I read was “American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House” by Jon Meacham. I’m currently reading “The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro.
