Have you ever wondered what the tall, shiny, steel object on the Northbank’s Riverwalk is? The steel structure is a memorial commemorating the Great Fire of Jacksonville in 1901. The fire was the largest metropolitan fire to have taken place in the South, before or since. As devastating as the fire was, reconstruction began immediately and Downtown — as well as other areas — was renewed, revamped and refreshed. The memorial was created by artist Bruce White and was the first work created after the City began its “Art in Public Places” program.
