The Jacksonville Public Library Foundation and one of its newest sponsors, Gunster, Attorneys at Law, welcomed supporters of the library at a reception Wednesday at the main branch of the library.
“In tough economic times we need champions,” said Betsy Lovett, chair of the board of directors of the foundation. “George LeMieux and Gunster are some of the champions I speak of.”
Lovett also recognized Mayor John Peyton as a champion of literacy for creating a book club program and being a “good friend to the library.” As he has in other areas of government, Peyton saluted and called for more public involvement to help maintain programs.
“We are bracing for tough economic times and it seems like parks and libraries are the first to get cut when we have to make tough budget decisions,” said Peyton. “We could use more people like George LeMieux that are willing to step up and help the community.”
The Jacksonville Public Library received total grants in the amount of $362,842.53 in 2008.
