• Mayor John Peyton has nominated longtime friend Ashton Hudson to continue serving on the JEA’s board of directors. Hudson is a current member serving an unexpired term that’s up Feb. 28. The nominations is for a first full term that would expire Feb. 28, 2013.

• It was announced at Monday’s Meninak meeting that there’s a program guide from the 1963 Meninak Charity Bowl floating around on eBay. The seller is unknown, but it originates from Hilliard and the starting bid is set at $9.99, though no one has yet to bid on it. For more from Monday’s Meninak meeting, see page 3.

• The Mexican restaurant that’s moving into the former Dona Maria’s location at the Landing is still on schedule to open this month. It will be called “Cinco de Mayo” and is owned and managed by the family that operates the local La Napolera chain.

• The Wounded Warrior Project and “Face Off for a Cause” will join forces Saturday at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium to present two collegiate lacrosse games. All event proceeds will benefit WWP and the servicemen and women the organization supports as they transition from military to civilian life. The first game between University of Maryland and The United States Air Force Academy begins at noon, then Clemson and Florida State will face off at 3 p.m. Tickets for the event are $15 and are available for purchase online at http://faceoff.woundedwarriorproject.org.

• New Gator Bowl Association Chair Daniel Murphy of Fidelity will preside over his first official meeting March 5 at the stadium. According to Murphy, Gator Bowl Committee members will see “significant changes” this year regarding committee requirements. He says there will be less fundraising and more fun.

• William Hammel, chairman and CEO of Synovus Bank of Jacksonville, has indicated his bank will not renew its Players Championship corporate ticket package. Hammel said the economy is the reason and they will practice what the bank tells its customers: “don’t spend it if you do not have it.”

• Gov. Charlie Crist and Attorney General Bill McCollum are looking for the City to nominate a police officer and an advocate for two awards the State will give out April 26-May 2 during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The nominations are due Feb. 27.

• There is still time for local college students to apply for the Collegiate Leadership Experience Class of 2009. The program is offered through Leadership Jacksonville and the deadline to apply is March 2. For more, call Megan Folds at 396-6263, ext. 26.
