• James E.C. Perry, of Sanford was invested as Florida’s 85th Supreme Court Justice on Friday in Tallahassee. Perry is Florida’s fourth African-American Justice and was sworn in by the first African-American appointed to the Court, retired Justice Joseph Hatchett.

• The Judicial Nominating Commission for the First District Court of Appeal (JNC) is now accepting applications to fill the vacancy resulting from the retirement of Judge Edwin B. Browning, Jr., effective Sept. 30. An original and nine copies of the completed application and all attachments must be delivered to Peter Antonacci, 301 S. Bronough St., Suite 600, Tallahassee, FL 32301, no later than 5 p.m. June 24. The JNC must provide Gov. Crist with a list of from three to six nominees by July 31. Applicants must have been members of The Florida Bar for the preceding 10 years, registered voters and residents of the territorial jurisdiction of the court at the time they assume office. Applications can be obtained on the Florida Bar Web site, www.floridabar.org.

• Local members of the First District Court of Appeals JNC are, chair Steven Yablonski, Marcia Tjoflat of Pappas Metcalf Jenks & Miller, and Fred Franklin of Rogers Towers.

• The YLS is seeking applicants for Sports League Commissioner or Co-Commissioner. The Commissioner is responsible for oversight of the various Jacksonville Bar Association sports leagues. Please contact Kirby Oberdorfer at [email protected] for more information.  

• State of Florida Representative for District No. 15 Audrey Gibson addressed law clerks attending the Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section “Noon in June” event Wednesday and told them she might aspire to the same goal as they do. After working part time for the law firm of Terrell Hogan as a legal assistant and investigator, Gibson said she might consider pursuing a law degree after she finishes her last term as a State Representative.

• There are four seats open on the Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyer Section (YLS) Board of Governors. Beginning on June 8, anyone interested in running for election to the YLS Board of Governors should submit their name to Lee Wedekind ([email protected]), along with their choice as to which seat they are seeking. Seats 1, 3 and 5 are open for election for a two-year term and seat 2 is open for a one-year term. The deadline to submit names for election to the YLS Board of Governors is 5 p.m. July 1. Voting will begin July 9 at the Jacksonville Bar Association office in the Aetna Building and will continue through July 16. Members can also vote at the YLS Annual Meeting on July 16 at the Haskell Building. 

• Recently retired Shirley Nulf of Legislative Services will be honored by City Council Tuesday night for her 32 years with the City. Council member Warren Jones will presented Nulf with a framed resolution.

• Council will also consider a resolution that would make June 20 the first Filipino Pride Day in Jacksonville.

• The 14th annual Vestcor Family Foundation 5K Bridges Run is set for July 18. The run starts at 7:30 p.m. in Hemming Plaza. Vestcor Chairman John Rood is asking his business partners to donate $2,000 to the cause. Last year, the area charities that benefitted from the run included American Diabetes Association, Boy Scouts of America, The ARC Jacksonville, Children’s Miracle Network and others.

• JTA is hosting a public meeting on the widening of I-95 between Butler Boulevard and Bowden Road June 17. The meeting is at the Jacksonville Marriott on Salisbury Road from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

• Henry Fonde is up for reappointment to the Duval County Tourist Development Council. This is Fonde’s third term and it’ll expire June 30, 2013. Also, Ryan Jones is up for appointment to the Taxation, Revenue & Utilization Commission. He’ll replace current Chair John Palombi.

• Here’s a little-known item. State Attorney Angela Corey and Ethics Officer Carla Miller were roommates in law school at the University of Florida.
