Winter is on its last legs here on the First Coast and spring is right around the corner, which means that YLS’s two major charitable events are upon us.
On March 20, YLS hosted its fifth annual “Tee it Up!” for charity golf tournament at The Plantation at Ponte Vedra. This year, the tournament’s beneficiary was the Family Nurturing Center of Florida.
The tournament was sold out once again this year as almost 90 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the course. The YLS would like to thank all of our sponsors for your continued support of our tournament. If you see this year’s tournament chair Elizabeth Howard, please offer her your congratulations on a job well done.
For those of you who prefer road courses to golf courses, you’ve probably just finished the River Run and are looking for the next mountain to climb. Good news! The Young Lawyers Section’s annual “Run for Cover!” 5K road race is right around the corner - mark your calendars for May 2. All proceeds from the race support the Florida Skin Care Foundation.
“Run for Cover!” is one of several races around the state of Florida that are run in memory of Alan C. Sundberg, Jr., who died of skin cancer in 1998 at the age of 33. Alan is the son of former Florida Supreme Court Justice Alan C. Sundberg, and the brother of Tallahassee lawyer Bill Sundberg, who is one of the founding members of the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation. Founded in 1996, the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation is dedicated to educating Floridians about the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and the fastest growing. Each year, nearly one million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer. Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, is the most common cancer among people between 25 and 29 years old. It is estimated that one person dies of melanoma every hour in the United States. Skin cancer can be prevented if simple measures are taken. The disease can be cured if detected and treated early.
The “Run for Cover!” 5K road race will be held on Sat., May 2 at 8 a.m. The race will start and finish at the Duval County Courthouse, located on Bay Street in Downtown Jacksonville. This year’s race is a flat and fast course that loops around the stadium - the perfect race to go for your 5K personal record.
Free skin cancer screenings will be offered to everyone (runners, volunteers and spectators) by local dermatologists. Over the past four years, dozens of local racers have been helped by the early detection of skin abnormalities as a result of this race. As usual, YLS is partnering with 1st Place Sports to put on this great event. If you would like to run, please register at your nearest 1st Place Sports store or visit them online at www.1stplacesports.com. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact me at 359-7706 or [email protected].
Thank you for your continued support of the YLS and its charitable events. We look forward to seeing you on the courses!
