Usually on Proclamation Day, Mayor John Peyton does all the signing, but yesterday he handed over the pen to local artist Leigh Murphy. She was recently named a “Signature Artist” by the American Watercolor Society, one of just 34 in Florida, and stopped by City Hall yesterday to sign her first watercolor with her name followed by “AWS.” Murphy said her watercolors have been selling for about $3,000 and when asked if her new suffix might increase their value she replied, “We’ll see.” Peyton wielded the pen and signed several official proclamations including one to retroactively designate May 11-15 as “Architecture Week” in recognition of the American Institute of Architects Jacksonville Chapter’s celebration of the profession.
