Professionalism in one’s line of work is a vital component of maintaining credibility and an effective business. But the same can be said for the practices in the courtroom.

For the fourth consecutive year, courtroom etiquette and professionalism were again the topic of discussion for law students and attorneys alike during the Gary Pajcic Professionalism Seminar hosted by the Jacksonville chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

The seminar was held in the honor of the late attorney, who organizers said epitomized professionalism in the courtroom.

“It’s a very special day for trial advocates,” said program chair Hugh Cotney. “When you think professionalism, you think Gary Pajcic ... he was a great, professional attorney but as everyone who knew him knows, an even better person.”

The all-afternoon event began with opening remarks from Chief Judge Donald Moran and was followed by a judiciary panel consisting of judges Jim Daniel, W. Gregg McCaulie, Jeff Morrow, Virginia Norton and Adrian Soud discussing ethics and professionalism from their vantage points on the bench.

Cotney also provided a case law update on ethics and professionalism for both beginning and experienced lawyers.

Following Cotney’s presentation, several judicial assistants were in the spotlight and gave their perspective on the topic of the day. The featured judicial assistants included Kristy Bend of judge Karen Cole’s office; Carla Hernandez of judge Jean Johnson’s office; and Marion Thomas of judge Henry Davis’ office.

An additional group discussion on professionalism and courtroom ethics followed with panelists that included past Florida Bar President Rutledge Liles, Charlie Pillans of The Bedell Firm and Dianne Weaver of Harrell & Harrell. Their discussion was moderated by 2009 ABOTA President Michael O’Neal.

The seminar concluded with what many members said was the highlight of the annual event, a comedic professionalism courtroom skit this year featuring judge Waddell Wallace, attorney Kristen Van Der Linde of Boyd & Jenerette and Tad Griffin of Pajcic & Pajcic.

Close to 75 members of the legal community attended, with many calling the annual event a must-see.

“I make sure all of my attorneys attend,” said Steve O’Hara of the O’Hara Firm. “It’s one I don’t want them to miss.”
