The Young Lawyers Section Fall Line Up
It is hard to believe that it is already November and that the holidays are right around the corner! This has been a very busy year for the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of The Jacksonville Bar Association and we are looking forward to many more events in 2010.
But, before the year is over, there are still several events that no young lawyer should miss. On Thursday, November 19, 2009, YLS will host a new event: Movie Night. The evening will begin with a happy hour at 5 Points Theatre at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a showing of “Runaway Jury” at 7 p.m. This great legal thriller stars none other than John Cusack, along with a few lesser known actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Piven. We are really looking forward to this event and hope to see a great turn out. To RSVP, contact Christian George at [email protected]. A special thank you to Legal Artworks and Smith Hulsey Busey for sponsoring the event.
The last official event of the year will be the Federal Judicial Luncheon on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. This event offers young lawyers a relaxed and open forum to meet and converse with the local federal judiciary. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will run until 1 p.m. To RSVP, please contact Elizabeth Howard (oh wait, that’s me!) at [email protected] by December 2, 2009.
YLS will be kicking off 2010 in style with the first of our monthly happy hours on January 13, 2010 at Golftec. Drinks will be served from 6-9 p.m. More information to follow!
January is also time for the YLS “Holidays in January.” Through this program, YLS teams up with Family Support Services of North Florida to provide Jacksonville foster children between the ages of one and 13 a special holiday in January. The event includes a holiday-themed event chalk full of gifts, food, and entertainment and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus. If you are interested in volunteering at this great event, please contact Fraz Ahmed at [email protected].
With the new year also comes the never ending YLS Sports League battle. Winter 4-on-4 basketball will start January 5, 2010 and run through February 18, 2010. Basketball will then be followed by Spring co-ed flag football, beginning February 23, 2010. For more information concerning the Sports League, please contact Rick Britton at [email protected] or Charlie Jimerson at [email protected].
By March, YLS will be busy a Judicial Breakfast on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, focusing on Duval County, Family, and Juvenile courts. Much like the Federal Judicial Luncheon, the Judicial Breakfast offers young lawyers the chance to chat with other YLS members, as well as several judges who take time out of their busy schedules to attend. There was a great turnout for the Judicial Breakfast held on November 12, 2009, focusing on Civil, Criminal and Probate, and we are looking forward to similar success in March.
All this leads us to the YLS annual 5K Run to Benefit the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation on Saturday, April 3, 2010. This is one of several races around the state of Florida in memory of Alan C. Sundberg Jr., who died of skin cancer in 1998 at the age of 33. Alan is the son of former Florida Supreme Court justice Alan C. Sundberg, and the brother of Tallahassee lawyer Bill Sundberg, who is one of the founding members of the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation. Founded in 1996, the Florida Skin Cancer Foundation is dedicated to educating Floridians about the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun. Free skin cancer screenings will be offered to everyone (runners, volunteers and spectators) by local dermatologists. If you are interested in running please visit www.1stplacesports.com for registration information. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Christian George at [email protected]. YLS is also holding a name and logo competition in conjunction with the 2010 race. The winning logo and name submittal will receive a free race entry.
The Young Lawyers Section continues to work diligently to provide educational and social events for our members, as well as to give back to the community. If you are interested in becoming involved or would like more information about our calendar events, please visit our Facebook page. You can find it by simply searching “Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section.” It is a great resource. Plus, we are trying to make it to 300 friends and we need your help!
