The Contract Postal Unit at Sundrez at the Landing recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. When Doug Ganson cut the ribbon to open the unit a year ago, it marked the first time Downtown had a post office since the one closed at the old Federal Courthouse.
“Having it in the store generates a lot of traffic,” said Ganson.
With the exception of post office boxes and passports, the unit offers all the services you’ll find at other post offices. Sundrez also carries a complete line of mailing supplies, making the location a one-stop shop for everything from cards and letters to packages up to 70 pounds.
While the volume of business has so far been slightly short of his original projections, Ganson said being able to mail letters and packages and buy stamps has proven to be a hit with his customers. He has operated a convenience store at the Landing since 1993 and Ganson said the current economy is the most challenging since he opened his doors for the first time. Corporate travel is down and Sundrez depends on business travelers who stay in Downtown’s hotels for much of its sales volume. Ganson said he believes the urban core is more “recession-proof” than the suburbs and he’s confident the economy will rebound.
“I remain cautiously optimistic,” he said.
The post office at Sundrez is open from 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. The last letter and package pickup is at 5:50 p.m. Monday-Friday and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
