• While history is less than definitive on the point, it is generally believed that Ocean Street was named for one of Jacksonville founder Isaiah Hart’s sons, Ossian. Another theory is that in June, 1822 when the first survey was conducted to lay out streets, it was rainy season. The entire area north of the river was swampy to begin with and may have been flooded. Hart also had daughters named Julia and Laura.
