• During the Jacksonville Port Authority’s board of directors meeting Tuesday, David Kulik was elected chair for the 2009-10 year, which starts Oct. 1. Kulik succeeds William Mason, who is completing his second full term. Buck Fowler was elected vice chair, Reginald Gaffney was re-elected secretary and Herschel Vinyard was elected treasurer. Steve Busey and Ricardo Morales are also on the Port’s board.
• The remodeled Dunkin’ Donuts on Atlantic Boulevard is now open. It’s next to Regency Harley Davidson.
• Some changes at the public libraries. You can now use an Internet computer for 45 minutes instead of 30. However, effective Oct. 1, you can’t get five free black and white copies anymore. They are 10 cents each.
• City Council Member Michael Corrigan, who is chairing the Special Committee on City Pension Sustainability, has revised the committee’s meeting schedule. It will now meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 3 p.m. in Council Chambers. However, there isn’t a meeting in December due to the Council break and the January meeting is Jan. 20 due to MLK Day and the February meeting is Feb. 17 due to President’s Day.
• There’s a new shopping/strip mall planned for the Beach. A large rendering indicates it’s going in the space where the Sonic in Neptune Beach was located before it closed.
• The Jacksonville Jaguars celebrated the home opener of the organization’s 15th season by welcoming back some alumni. About 30 past players and over 100 Roar Alumni took the field at half time to welcome the new season.
• Recently elected City Council member John Meserve has received his committee assignments from Council President Richard Clark. He will take the seats vacated by his predecessor, Art Graham, on Recreation & Community Development and he is Vice Chair of Transportation, Energy & Utilities.
• A charity “Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament” will be hosted by the board of directors of the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at The Poker Room at the Orange Park Kennel Club. • The recently established 501(C)3 Jacksonville Fire Fighters Charities is looking for “Celebrities” to participate in its “Celebrity Dunk Tank” at the Home and Patio Show Oct. 1-4 at the Osborn Center. Volunteers will be scheduled for two-hour increments, unless they want more time in the tank. City Council member Don Redman has agreed to visit the tank on the first day of the show. • It was a busy weekend for members of the State’s division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. They arrested 27 individuals for underage alcohol possession at the Landing Friday evening and another five at the Jaguars home opener Sunday.
• It might still feel like summer, but yesterday marked the first day of fall. The official time of the seasonal shift was at 5:18 p.m.
• Jacksonville Community Council Inc. has a crisper and revamped look. The organization with a focus in improving quality of life for the region has a new Web site. To take a peek, go to www.jcci.org.
• Speaking of JCCI, its 34th annual meeting takes place today from noon–1:30 p.m. at the Schultz Center. The theme for this meeting, “At A Crossroads,” might have multiple meetings given the recent annual study regarding City finances and the organization’s own funding needs.
• Correction to a City Note from last week: Attorney W. Scott Harders did join the law offices of Brennan, Manna & Diamond, but not the Jacksonville office. Instead, he joined the firm’s office in Akron, Ohio.
