The new roundabout on Laura Street at the Landing has taken shape. The center section is ready for the pouring of concrete to form the subterranean component of the base that will support the statue of Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson in the middle of the roundabout.
The next step after the concrete is set will be to lay the asphalt around the circle. Then, pavers for the crosswalks and cobblestones for the road surface will be installed. The base for the statue will be precast concrete and should be fabricated by the end of May.
Expect a crane to arrive in June to relocate the 2,800-pound Clark Mills statue depicting Jackson saluting his troops after the Battle of New Orleans from its location outside the Landing to its new home at the foot of Laura Street.
