Pedestrians walking past Independent Square to and from the Landing are getting a preview of what the sidewalks will look like from Independent Drive to Hemming Plaza when the Laura Street improvement project is complete.
The combination of concrete and pavers will eventually be joined by new landscaping, wayfaring signage and other amenities to improve the streetscape.
The roundabout in front of the Landing is in operation for eastbound and westbound traffic and will be fully operational when the sidewalks on both sides of Laura Street between the Landing and Bay Street are completed.
One Downtown business manager echoes the sentiments of merchants on the south end of the project, a group that will be happy when the construction work ends.
“With the sidewalks torn up, it’s still affecting our lunch crowd,” said Landing General Manager Janice Lowe. “But having the roundabout open has helped our vehicular traffic.”
