Two precast concrete columns have been installed at the northeast and northwest corners of Laura Street and Independent Drive. They are part of the Laura Street improvement project and will support a wrought iron arch that will identify the south end of the retail corridor when the streetscape enhancements are complete. A similar installation will be put in place at Hemming Plaza to mark the northern boundary.
Along the way, a series of historical markers by the City’s Historic Planning Commission and the Jacksonville Historical Society will be set into the sidewalk. The intent is to tell the story of how Laura Street is part of the City’s history.
The street was named after one of Jacksonville founder Isaiah Hart’s daughters.
In the late 1800s, tourists staying at the resort hotels around Hemming Park (now Hemming Plaza), strolled down the street to visit shops, restaurants and saloons on Bay and Forsyth streets.
“This is an exciting project that will allow people to learn more about the historic buildings on Laura Street,” said JHS Executive Director Emily Lisska.
