JBA YLS Board of Governors member Christian George
With the end of summer quickly approaching, excitement is in the air as anticipation builds about both the upcoming football season and the fact that we can soon walk two blocks to the Courthouse without appearing as if we traveled there in a lazy river or water slide.
There is additional cause for excitement as the Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar is in the process of setting up its social calendar to provide fun events and networking opportunities for its members over the next several months.
The next YLS Happy Hour is already set for Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Ivy Bar at 113 E. Bay St. The venue was originally set for The Twisted Martini, which abruptly closed instead of hosting such an esteemed group. The Happy Hour will start at 5:30 p.m. and last until the last YLS member leaves or is thrown out. There will be a limited open bar provided by our sponsor, U.S. Legal Support.
This will be the first YLS social event since the Annual Meeting and the YLS is expecting a huge turnout. Please do not miss this opportunity to network with fellow young lawyers, while enjoying free drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
The August Happy Hour will be the first of many that will be scheduled periodically over the coming months. Additional information on the happy hours and other YLS social events will be advertised through e-mail and on The Jacksonville Bar website and YLS Facebook site as they are planned. If you haven’t become our friend on Facebook yet, you really should.
In addition to periodic happy hours, there are several other fun events being planned for this upcoming year. In April, the YLS will host its annual Run for Cover 5K and party. Last year, close to 500 runners participated in the race and many more enjoyed the live music, refreshments, and energetic atmosphere. This year’s Run for Cover promises to be an even better event, as Pat Kilbane has promised to exceed last year’s runaway success.
More details will be released as the event draws closer, but early rumors include the potential addition of a dunking booth and petting zoo to enhance the carnival atmosphere.
Next summer, the YLS will host its Annual Meeting and Election. Details are left to be determined, but good times are guaranteed based on last year’s meeting.
The Jacksonville Bar Athletic League provides yet another terrific and enjoyable opportunity to spend time with fellow lawyers outside of work. While the aches and pains of last year’s season have yet to wear off, the second annual season of kickball will begin in October. Most participants from last season are full of hilarious stories of kickball hi-jinx from the field. Do not miss the opportunity to share in this year’s shenanigans.
The YLS wants to hear from you! There is no reason that this social year cannot be the most well-attended and enjoyable of any in years past. If you have any ideas for happy hour locales, social events or other suggestions on how we can make the YLS more fun for you, please e-mail me at [email protected].
The YLS is always in need of more volunteers for its many social, charitable and community projects. In fact, the YLS is currently seeking interested co-chairs for many of its projects. If you are interested in participating in any or all of the YLS events or are interested in becoming a co-chair, please contact YLS President Lee Wedekind at [email protected].
Finally, The YLS is also seek-ing to appoint a Sports Commissioner or Commissioners for the Athletic League. For information or details, please e-mail Fraz Ahmed at [email protected].
