The Teen Services Department at the Main Library is the center of a contest designed to give young readers another creative outlet to explore their love of books. There are also prizes involved.
The “My Favorite Book” video contest is a lead-in to the Oct. 17-23 “Teen Reading Week.” Videographers ages 12-18 are invited to produce a two-minute commercial for their favorite book. The winners will be presented at a reception Oct. 23 in the Hicks Auditorium in the Main Library’s Conference Center.
Judges for the contest include Mayor John Peyton, State Sen. John Thrasher, Duval County Public Schools Instructional Materials Supervisor Bryant Frazier, a library media specialist and a representative from Fidelity Investments, which is sponsoring the prizes for the competition.
The first-prize videographer will receive an iPad, second place wins an iTouch and third prize is an iPod Classic.
“We think it’s a fun thing to do that’s tied to reading and when the contestants see the other videos, it might encourage them to read other books,” said Teen Services Department Senior Librarian Keli Likins.
Participants can use their own video camera or the library’s HD recorder, with or without assistance from library staff, she added.
The top three videos will be screened at the reception and all entries will be posted at https://www.youtube.com/user/JPLTeenScene.
Entries must be submitted by Sept. 30. For complete rules and entry forms, visit www.jpl.coj.net and click on “Explore JPL for Teens” or call 630-0673.
