After hearing the complaints from people who thought the city didn’t have the traditional holiday banners and decorations adorning the Downtown light poles, one businessman decided to step up and make it happen.

That accounts for the “Seasons Greetings” banners that have been placed on the light poles throughout the central business district.

Jim Bailey, publisher of the Daily Record, said that with the fiscal challenges facing the City, there was no way the taxpayers could be called on to invest in street decorations that would be used once a year, so that left only one option.

“This is one of the things businesses can do to enhance their neighborhood when the city is facing the challenges it is,” he said.

“It doesn’t mean we have to accept it. It doesn’t mean as businesses we let our community suffer. I’m proud of Downtown and I want citizens to get excited coming down here,” said Bailey. “It helps everyone, from visitors to the people who already are or wanting to invest in Downtown”

Bailey said that the City wanted to get Downtown in the holiday spirit, but the resources weren’t there. He provided the banners and the City agreed to install them.

“Certain things just ought to be done and I think it’s up to the business community to step in and make things happen, and not just Downtown,” said Bailey.

Bailey said more banners are available and if a Downtown property or business owner has a light pole unadorned and would like to participate in the holiday decoration, to call him at 356-2466.
