• Look for another award soon honoring former State Rep. and City Council President Don Davis, who passed away last year. The Utility Contractors Association of North Florida, Inc. has established The Don Davis Excellence in Service Award and they’ll officially present the award at the organization’s annual meeting Jan. 21. They have also asked Mayor John Peyton to declare Jan. 21 to be “Representative Don Davis Recognition Day.”
• A few filed candidates have withdrawn from local races. Clayton Junkins is no longer a candidate for mayor, Edwin Brady has withdrawn from the Council Dist. 3 race and Doreszell Nash has withdrawn from the School Board Dist. 6 race.
• Firehouse Subs is looking to send two people to the 2011 Super Bowl in Dallas. Through Feb. 7, patrons will get a scratch-off card worth something. The top prize is a trip for two to the game that’ll be played in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium.
• Tickets to John Rosemond’s parenting education seminar at The Bolles School Jan. 16 are still available on a first-come first-serve basis. They are $20 for an individual and $30 for two and there are two sessions. For more, e-mail [email protected].
• The City of Jacksonville’s Human Resources Department will hold a talent show Jan. 22 at noon in the Hicks Auditorium at the Main Library. Tickets are $3 each and proceeds will benefit the City employees’ United Way fundraising campaign.
• AXIA has been retained by the Gate River Run to provide sponsorship consulting services to include identifying and recruiting national sponsors for the Gate River Run and other races in 2011 and thereafter. With 20,000 runners, the Gate River Run is the nation’s largest 15k (9.3 mile) race and also serves as the annual USA 15 km Championships. AXIA will also represent sponsorship opportunities for other running events including the Corporate Run, Run for the Pies, Celebration 5K, Tour de Pain, Mandarin Run 10K, Outback Distance Classic and the Jacksonville Bank Marathon.
• With cold weather expected to continue throughout the week, JEA officials recently offered some tips on how to save both money and a little warmth during the stretch, including not running ceiling fans with heat on (it doesn’t re-circulate warm air), using rolled towels and blankets to avoid gaps in windows and ceilings, wrapping exposed and shallow pipes, dripping faucets as well as space heater protocol (never leaving them unattended, on overnight or near flammable items).
• Speaking of the cold weather, Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency yesterday for the state as it affects agriculture. Weight and size restrictions on trucks transporting certain crops have also been lifted for two weeks. (via News Service of Florida)
• The Pilot Club of Jacksonville will hold its 61st Annual Antiques Show & Sale Jan. 22-24 at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. It is the oldest running antique show in the state of Florida and dealers from seven states will be displaying their wares. The benefits from the show are donated each year to 20 different charities in the Jacksonville area. The show will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Tickets are $8 at the door. • The Economic Roundtable of Jacksonville will present Mark Kinevan, vice president for trading at The Energy Authority, at its next luncheon Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Jacksonville University’s Davis College of Business. Kinevan will share his thoughts on the current state of the global energy market and trading energy commodities. The Economic Roundtable of Jacksonville was founded in 1969 to provide a forum for economic issues and a network for local economists and those interested in business economics.
