• At tonight’s City Council meeting, Council member Stephen Joost will present a framed resolution honoring Nancy Olson, who ran the City’s Sister Cities program and passed away last year.
• Speaking of Council, President Richard Clark has nominated Council member John Crescimbeni to replace Art Graham on the Northeast Florida Regional Council.
• The Jacksonville Humane Society is holding its 125th anniversary Saturday with a big, free bash at its Beach Boulevard location. It’s from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and includes treats for pets, activities for the kids, food and, of course, the ability to adopt a dog or cat.
• Speaking of Saturday, Liberty Tax Service on Atlantic Boulevard is having a roadside party from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For the kids there will be a bounce house and face painting and food for all. For the adults, you can get $50 off your income tax preparation.
• The 2010 Humanitarian Awards, put on by OneJax, are set for May 13 at the Hyatt. This year’s “silver medallion” honorees are Jack Diamond, Marty Lanahan and Cleve Warren.
• State Rep. Mia Jones’ office is hosting a job fair today and tomorrow for persons interested in working on the 2010 U.S. Census. Openings are available for census takers as well as clerks, crew leaders and recruiters. Sessions are from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Downtown, South, North and Kent campuses of Florida State College at Jacksonville. Applicants must bring their driver’s license and Social Security card. • The Boy Scouts of America North Florida Council and Goodwill Industries of North Florida are conducting a community-wide drive to collect tents that will provide temporary shelter for Haiti’s earthquake survivors. New and serviceable used tents will be collected by all Scout packs, troops and crews through Feb. 19. Tents may also be dropped off at any Goodwill of North Florida store or donation center. • Jacksonville-based Tax Defense Network, a provider of IRS tax relief to individuals and businesses, needs to hire 120 people within the next 90 days. • Gov. Charlie Crist recently announced an additional $12.4 million worth of stimulus funding for programs that provide job training in renewable energy or energy efficiency fields is coming to Florida. At the local level, Florida State College at Jacksonville will benefit from the funds, which will go toward job training in energy efficient building construction and retrofitting as well as other green jobs.
• Speaking of green, the 3rd Annual Jacksonville Green Expo is set for May 15-16 at the Osborn Center.
