How did you get involved?
I became involved within the community at a very young age. When I was in high school, I was heavily involved with our Dreams Come True chapter at Bolles and was president of our girls-only service club, Anchor/Sigma, where we volunteered at the Sulzbacher Center, Soup Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity. This passion for helping others followed me to college, where I pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority. We hosted numerous events to benefit Children’s Cancer Charities through UNC Hospitals. It was an amazing experience to have one of the largest children’s cancer research facilities right on campus. We were able to see the difference we were making firsthand and it was truly inspirational. Upon returning to Jacksonville for law school, I joined The Jacksonville Bar Association as a student and immediately got involved. Since then, I have participated in The JBA Holiday Project, YLS Holiday in January, YLS Run for Cover, Law Day’s Law for the Layperson seminar, Rendezvous on the River Charity Fundraiser and High School Mock Trial Competition.
How can someone else get involved?
Find a passion and reach out! Whether you want to get outside and build a house for a struggling family who has fallen victim to this recession, or play checkers with a terminally ill child, or donate a used business suit to a single mother trying to get back on her feet, the opportunities to give back and make a difference are infinite. Contacting The Jacksonville Bar Association is a great place to start!
What have you learned/achieved through the experience?
I have learned to never take any of God’s blessings for granted, whether it is having a job, supportive friends and family or food on the table. I have learned to always strive to be gracious and thankful. I have also learned that all it takes is one person to make a difference in someone else’s life. It’s about seeing the light in the eyes of a foster child the first time she sits on Santa’s lap, or the kind words of a young man standing in line at the soup kitchen who until that minute didn’t know where his next meal was coming from or a disabled man with a tear in his eye watching as a group of volunteers builds his new home. And finally, I have learned that if you take the time to light a lamp for somebody, it will brighten your path twofold.
What was the last book you read or are reading?
