• The U.S. Census Bureau will shut down its telephone assistance line tomorrow, the last day for callers overlooked in the 2010 Census to complete a questionnaire by phone. Residents who believe they did not receive a form, who did not mail it back or have not been contacted can call, toll free, 1-866-872-6868 from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Interviews are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Russian.
• The Jacksonville Civic Council, founded in February, has hired Don Shea, most recently head of The Downtown Development Authority for Shreveport, La., as executive director. He will join the council in mid-September. Shea has 30 years of experience in the public and private sectors. The council said its strategy is not only to engage members to study selected citywide issues, but “to make an active difference in recommendations and solutions.” Shea joined the Shreveport agency in November 2007, and before that served for nearly seven years at the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership.
• Orlando-based Digital Risk plans a grand opening Aug. 4 at its new Southside offices, where it will employ 300 people in risk-mitigation services for the mortgage industry. The agenda says that Gov. Charlie Crist will attend, along with Digital Risk executives and Jacksonville officials, including Mayor John Peyton and City Council President Jack Webb.
• The Florida Lottery will offer a Jacksonville Jaguars-themed Scratch-Off game. The Jacksonville Jaguars game is currently on sale at some retailers and will be available at Florida Lottery retailers statewide beginning Aug. 3. In addition to the top prize of $100,000, the $5 Scratch-Off game offers cash prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000, and allows players to win up to 12 times on the same ticket.
