The theme for the June First Wednesday Art Walk was “Let’s Dance” and that’s exactly what happened.
From the Viva Panama USA folk dance performance in Hemming Plaza to the 1950s-style sock hop at Visit Jacksonville’s welcome center in the Greenleaf Building, people were moving their feet both on stage and through the streets to view all types of art on display among many venues.
Southlight Gallery on Forsyth Street between Laura and Hogan streets hosted a special performance. The space on the second floor above the gallery has been transformed into a temporary dance space for Braided Light, a contemporary experimental troupe. Several sets have been constructed upstairs, each for a specific performance.
“It’s a site-specific dance concert. The audience will move with each performance,” said Artistic Director Christina May.
Braided Light previewed its show at Art Walk and will also perform at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday
The next First Wednesday Art Walk is 5-9 p.m. July 7, rain or shine.
Artist and designer Amber Dulaney brought some of her jewelry and illustrations to Art Walk. It was her first time exhibiting at the monthly event.
Ross Mogerly, Hilary Libman, Christina May and Glenn Morgan of Braided Light, a contemporary dance group performing at Southlight Gallery.
Melissa Finelli at Bee Gallery at the Landing is raffling one of her paintings. Tickets are $5 and the drawing will be held at the July Art Walk.
Painter Steve Miller has been coming to Art Walk for two years. He said he likes to paint in Hemming Plaza. “If I sell something, that’s great too.”
