Thousands of cobblestones have been installed in the roundabout at the Landing. Each slab of granite is five inches by five inches by nine inches and weighs almost 50 pounds.

Jacksonville Economic Development Commission Deputy Executive Director Paul Crawford said it would be hard to say how long the street surface will last. “They could be there for hundreds, if not thousands, of years,” he said, based on the condition of streets in Europe of similar construction.

The next step is installation of brick pavers for the roundabout’s crosswalks, followed by the placement of the precast concrete base for the statue of Andrew Jackson on his horse, then finally the relocation of the life-size bronze statue.

After the first phase is complete, work will move north to the block of Laura Street between the Landing and Bay Street. One side of the sidewalk will be improved at a time to ensure access to businesses on the block, said Crawford.
