Members of the Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association went on the defense during last week’s monthly meeting when safety and security consultant Andrew Wooten presented tips on how to avoid becoming a crime victim.

Wooten interviews both prison inmates and survivors of crime for research on warning signs and uses the information as part of an interactive presentation. The top crimes against women, he said, are stalking in both parking lots and the home and identity theft. Wooten’s tips included everything from installing motion detector lights to how to get out of a car in a parking lot, each of which is easy to accomplish and takes little time, said Wooten.

As for how he conveyed the message, Wooten relied on volunteer participation, including from JWLA President Mary Scott.

“I think everyone really learned something,” said Scott, who was asked to portray someone getting out of her car in a parking lot. “I know I learned a thing or two and he (Wooten) really kept everyone engaged.”
