United Way thanks supporters

The United Way of Northeast Florida said Thursday that it raised almost $24.4 million in 2009, less than 2 percent below 2008.

“When we kicked off the campaign, the economic challenges were still prevalent and at the forefront of everyones mind,” said Mike Cascone, chair of United Way’s Board of Trustees.

More than 1,000 organizations led campaigns. A breakfast Thursday at the Main Library recognized supporters.

Meanwhile, The Tocqueville Society, consisting of donors giving $10,000 or more annually, raised more than $4.2 million, exceeding it goal.

Scott Brubaker, vice president of the Jacksonville Division of Publix Super Markets Inc., will serve as the 2010 campaign chair.

Top corporate donors were Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, which raised $1.76 million; CSX, $1.47 million; Publix, $1.1 million; and Vistakon, $1 million.
