Perkins Bar Foundation President Leslie Scott Jean-Bart, Banquet Committee Chair Latasha Garrison-Fullwood and Renee Simone listen as Judge Karen Mills-Francis congratulates the foundation for encouraging children to develop an interest in law, but urged members to also give their time to make a difference for the youth in the community. The Foundation reached out to area schools and asked students to review “The Bill of Rights.” Students at Brentwood Elementary School of the Arts were asked to identify the three most important rights, and the Second Amendment was popular among the top four essays.
“This is not to say they want to run out and get a gun,” said Duval County Judge Pauline Drake, chair of the essay contest. “They were saying that they should be able to be safe in their homes and be able to defend themselves.” The First and Fourth Amendments were also popular in the essays. Students from Fort Caroline Middle School aslo participated in the essay contest.
