Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., one of the city’s three Fortune 500 companies, reported sales of $1.7 billion for the third quarter, down 2.3 percent from the third quarter last year. Net income rose to $20.9 million from $16.6 million, while operating income fell to $20.8 million from $30 million.

Winn-Dixie Senior Vice President Dan Portnoy said the downturn was expected, given the economic climate, but that results were above projected consensus estimates.

“We’re sticking with our strategy, which we feel is the right one long-term,” said Portnoy.
