The Jacksonville Urban League celebrated the National Urban League’s 100th anniversary Wednesday during the chapter’s 37th Annual Centennial Equal Opportunity Luncheon at the Hyatt Downtown. While the local community-based nonprofit organization was founded in 1947, its mission of providing education, employment, economic and health empowerment programs and services to African-Americans and other vulnerable communities remains the same. Richard Danford (left), Jacksonville Urban League president, has been with the organization 18 years and said the event was a culmination of the efforts to change people’s lives for the better and has been a rewarding experience. The event was headlined by John Hofmeister (right), National Urban League chair, founder and CEO of Citizens for Affordable Energy and former Shell Oil president, who discussed the Urban League’s empowerment programs and how affordable energy coincides with its mission.
