U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw updated the Meninak Club of Jacksonville Monday about his observations about Washington, D.C., and the Nov. 2 elections.

Crenshaw said a third fewer people vote in non-presidential elections, which “works best for the most enthusiastic party.” Crenshaw, a Republican, said “there’s a certain amount of excitement” in the party.

Crenshaw said three groups – young people, African-Americans and Hispanics – “turbocharged” the 2008 election, helping to put Democratic President Barack Obama in office. He said those groups are experiencing double-digit unemployment, affecting their enthusiasm.

Crenshaw reminded the nearly 80 club members that his name will be on the ballot Tuesday for the District 4 seat. Opposing him is Troy D. Stanley, who lists no party affiliation, and there’s space for a write-in candidate.
