The finishing touches were going on the Florida Theatre’s latest sidewalk improvement project Monday. More than 1,300 new pavers have been installed and 140 of them commemorate people who have performed there and donors who wanted to contribute to the theater.
Funds raised through the sale of the personalized pavers will help pay for the ongoing maintenance and renovation of the historic venue, which opened as a move theater in 1927.
After being closed for three years, it reopened in 1983 following a $4.1 million restoration and has since been an active part of the local arts, cultural and community service scene.
The theater is the site of more than 200 events each year, including 100 events for local nonprofit and community organizations.
A campaign is under way to sell the next series of commemorative pavers, which will be installed on the Forsyth Street sidewalk a few steps west of the main entrance. For information, call 355-5661.
