• Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa promoted Colleen Piontek to spa manager. She joined in 2008 and has been in charge of developing and facilitating adult fitness programs. Piontek will oversee day-to-day operations of the Spa at Sawgrass and will be responsible for creating community promotional events, overseeing expenses and serving as acting spa director as needed.
• Mark your calendar for Nov. 5-6 for the “Saluting the Centennial of Naval Aviation” 2011 Naval Air Station Jacksonville Air Show, part of a yearlong celebration of “100 years of Naval Aviation.” The November show will feature the Super Shockwave Jet Truck racing down the runway at more than 300 mph and the Navy’s flight demonstration team, The Blue Angels. There will also be a Kids’ Zone along with displays and booths for novelties, food and drinks. Gates open at 9 a.m. and the show starts at 10 a.m. It’s free and open to the public.
• Five NFL Pro Bowlers committed to play in the inaugural Tim Tebow Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic: Adrian Peterson, Fred Taylor, Elvis Dumervil, David Garrard and Jason Taylor. The event May 7 at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass is the weekend before The Players Championship. Look for celebrities from golf, entertainment and, of course, football. Tebow, a Denver Broncos quarterback, was QB at Florida and former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel also plans to play.
• The Jacksonville Lean Consortium has scheduled Dr. John Toussaint, CEO of ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, to speak at its May 3 meeting. It’s 5:30 p.m. at the University of North Florida University Center. His topic will be reducing errors and costs involved in health care. • The GreenPointe Communities division of Jacksonville-based GreenPointe Holdings LLC acquired Amelia Walk in Fernandina Beach. The 358-acre master-planned community is in East Nassau County.
• The third installment of the “Downtown In-depth Series” is planned May 4 at the Omni. The topic is “Downtown Activation” and will feature Jacksonville Civic Council Executive Director Don Shea, Christine Burdick of the Downtown Tampa Partnership, Thomas Chatmon of the Orlando Downtown Development Board and Marjorie Ferrer of the Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority. • Old San Jose on the River, the residential riverfront community at 5000 San Jose Blvd., near San Marco, has opened for sales with condominium homes priced from the $330,000s. Project owner Condo Capital Solutions will use McGarvey Residential Communities, the community’s original developer, as the development manager. The community has three completed buildings, including a five-story, 18-unit condominium building on the St. Johns River, a four-unit condominium residence and three townhome residences. • Christina Ramirez-Smith, dean of Jacksonville University’s School of Education, will step down at the end of the academic year after five years of service. Under Ramirez-Smith’s leadership, the school was transformed from a unit within the College of Arts and Sciences with fewer than 100 students to an independent school comprised of the Five-year Teacher Education Program, a three-concentration Leadership and Learning master’s in education and undergraduate majors in sport management and exercise science with more than 400 graduate and undergraduate students. A national search will be conducted for a dean of the School of Education.
