An estimated 800 people paid their respects to former Mayor Ed Austin Thursday at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Riverside. City and business leaders, elected officials and other associates and friends attended services for the former mayor and state attorney and shared condolences with his family. Longtime friend and former prosecutor Audrey Moran and Austin’s son, Steve Austin, each spoke of his legacy. “His proudest accomplishment was always his family,” said Moran. “Ed Austin loved all of Jacksonville, not just part of it, and Jacksonville loved him back.” Steve Austin talked about his father’s integrity and his ability to treat everyone with respect. Ed Austin served as state attorney for 20 years and as mayor from 1991-95. Austin is survived by his son, two daughters, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He died April 23 at the age of 84.
